The Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship
The
Colburn-Keenan Foundation, Inc. announces the availability of
the 2008-2009 Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship Program. In 2002,
AHF, Inc., with support of the Carew family, launched this
outstanding academic scholarship to support students in the
bleeding disorders community.
The Colburn-Keenan Foundation,
Inc. was established upon the deaths of Donald Colburn and Kathy
Ann Keenan, Founders and executive leadership of AHF. Beginning
in 2007, their commitment to charitable giving will be carried
forward by their Foundation. We are happy to be able to make the
Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship program available for the coming
academic year, sponsored by the Foundation.
The
Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Beth
Carew because she was a model for us all. Beth Carew was an
energetic, bright, loving, and caring woman who was deeply
concerned about her family and community. She was also one of
the very few women to have hemophilia A. With untiring
commitment and drive, she worked for the benefit of the local
and national bleeding disorders movements. Beth Carew died in
1994 of complications associated with hemophilia. Joined by the
Carew family, we believe this scholarship program to be an
appropriate way to honor Beth and her memory. We believe that
knowledge is the key to the future for our community. We are
daily inspired by the successes of young people and adults
living with the challenges of bleeding disorders. Who is
Eligible for a Beth Carew Scholarship?
Any student with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, or a
related inherited bleeding disorder is eligible to apply for
this Scholarship as long as s/he meets the criteria outlined
above. In 2008, high school seniors who have been accepted to an
accredited college or university may apply. College freshmen,
sophomores, and juniors may also apply.
The Process
The 2008-2009 process will be as follows. The application is
available below. They are also being distributed to chapters,
Hemophilia Treatment Centers, the National Hemophilia
Foundation, the Hemophilia Federation of America, and other
national and community organizations. The 2008-2009 applications
will be due at the Foundation office no earlier than February 1
and no later than April 4, 2008 and awards will be announced by
in mid-May 2008. Incomplete or late applications will not be
considered. Scholarship award winners will be featured on our
web site. An impartial panel of lay people, educators, and
medical providers from the bleeding disorders community will
review and judge applications. Criteria will include academic
excellence, community service, recommendations, and personal
statements.
Scholarship Funds
Scholarship funds will be awarded in two equal payments of $1000
during the academic year. Payments will be made directly to the
institution, one payment in August/September, and one payment in
December/January or directly to the student if requested.
Scholarship recipients must demonstrate successful completion of
the first semester or quarter(s) in order to receive the second
payment for that academic year. If a recipient were to fail to
complete the first semester (or quarters) in good academic
standing, the second payment of this award would not be made.
The Colburn-Keenan Foundation Board of Directors is delighted to
have the opportunity to give back to our community in this way.
Providing educational opportunities for young people is very
important to us. We wish you the very best of luck as you pursue
your dreams.
